No Bundesliga on TV in India for 2020/21 season- Fancode given rights & appointed streaming partner

India has been one of the world’s fastest growing nations in terms of football viewers, but the country will not have Bundesliga for the 2020/21 season on live television. The rights for this season have been given to Fancode, and it currently appears that it will be a streaming-only service. The announcement was made on September 18, 2020, on the eve of the new 20/21 Bundesliga season (reigning domestic and European champions Bayern play Schalke on MD1)

The move is bit of a setback for football viewers in India- the French Ligue 1 does not have an official broadcaster there, and the Spanish La Liga is also a stream only service (on Facebook). The country however does have a high rate of mobile internet penetration and data rates are amongst the cheapest in the world. Fancode are also initially offering streaming of Bundesliga games for free, but it remains to be seen whether they make it chargeable in the future.

Fancode Bundesliga India

For the better part of this decade, the Bundesliga TV rights in India have been with Star Sports (who also telecast the Premier League). Star have however opted not to renew, and some say this is because of the high prices they have paid for the rights to the hugely successful Indian Premier League T20 tournament (which begins tomorrow and effectively clashes with the Bundesliga till mid November). The IPL is normally held in April-May, but was moved to October owing to the Coronavirus pandemic.

United determined to hold on to Pogba

According to headlines in the Spanish press, Manchester United are keen to hold on to Paul Pogba and are determined not to let their French star go to Real Madrid. Los Blancos boss Zinedine Zidane is a long term admirer of his compatriot, and despite splashing out millions in the summer market, is keen to bring the medio to the Bernabeu.

However Marca say United are not willing to budge from their 200 million euro tag for Pogba, which may force Zidane to look at alternative options like Christian Eriksen or Donny van de Beek.

Croatians at Inter Milan- Modric mulls switch

Inter Milan could have another Croatian in their ranks for the upcoming 2018/19 season after it was revealed that Real Madrid star Luka Modric was mulling a switch to the San Siro. Modric, 32, was a key figure for his country at the recently concluded World Cup, winning three MOTM awards as his side finished runners up to France.

Inter already have Marcelo Brozovic and Ivan Perisic in their ranks and have taken Sime Vrsaljko on loan. With three Croatians already on the Nerazzurri’s books, the San Siro looks like an attractive destination for Modric, who has pretty much everything there was to win at Real Madrid.

However the question remains whether Real will be willing to sell both Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo in the same transfer window. This may be Real’s best opportunity to cash in on Modric, and the move will also potentially allow more first team football for Mateo Kovacic.

Inter are also in the market for Arturo Vidal, but the Chilean’s transfer may not materialise if they get Modric.
