Sunday Roundup- Bayer Leverkusen 0:2 Schalke & Leipzig 1:2 Cologne 2018

A first half strike from Guido Burgstaller and a late penalty from Nabil Bentaleb saw Schalke beat Leverkusen 2:0 at the Bay Arena and go third in the league.

Burgstaller broke his seven game drought when he produced a cool finish to open the scoring on 11 minutes. Daniel Caligiuri’s long pass found the Austrian international in space, and he deftly lofted it over defender Panagiotis Retsos before slotting home.

Things went from bad to worse for Leverkusen, who could’ve potentially gone second with a win here, when Dominik Kohr was sent off seven minutes before half time.

Schalke finished the job through substitute Nabil Bentaleb’s second half penalty after Retsos had brought down Embolo in the box. The Algerian, brought on in the second half for Leon Goretzka, sent Bernd Leno the wrong way for his fourth of the campaign.

Mainz 1:1 Wolfsburg 2018

Bruno Labbadia’s first game as Wolfsburg manager saw his side come away with a draw from the OPEL Arena against fellow strugglers Mainz. The visitors had a dream start to the game as Josip Brekalo opened the scoring for them in the sixth minute- his first for the club since his switch from Stuttgart.

William’s cross from the left, perhaps meant for Divock Origi, evaded the Belgian, but landed at the feet of Brekalo, whose first time effort, a weak one was blocked. Continue reading Mainz 1:1 Wolfsburg 2018

Napoli knocked out, Atalanta suffer late heartbreak against Dortmund

It was a mixed bag for the four Italian teams in action in the Europa League earlier this evening, with two crashing out and two making it to the round of 16.

One obvious qualifier was AC Milan, who beat Ludogorets Razgrad 1-0 at the San Siro, adding to their 3-0 first leg win in Bulgaria.

The other, perhaps not so obvious qualifier was Lazio. The Biancocelesti had lost 1-0 to Steaua in the first leg in Romania, but found their mojo to win 5-1 at the Olimpico, and thus completed a 5-2 win on aggregate.
