Inter Milan have joined the race to sign Ronaldinho from Barcelona in a move designed to scupper city rivals AC Milan.
The Brazilian ace's brother and agent, Roberto de Assis, revealed on Saturday that talks with Milan had gone well and that a deal was close.
But Inter president Massimo Moratti has other ideas.
Talking ahead of Inter's 2-0 win over Fiorentina on Sunday evening, Moratti confirmed he would not simply sit back and watch one of the world's greatest players sign for the Rossoneri.
Moratti said: “If Ronaldinho goes to Milan, it will also depend on the willingness of Inter.
“We will evaluate our options next week.
“We have an exceptional relationship with Barcelona and Ronaldinho’s management team so we will have to see.
“We will also have to see if we decide to pursue this to the end. But if the market is open to Milan, it is open to us too.”
Inter coach Roberto Mancini also made a point of talking about the World Cup winner after his side had restored their four-point lead at the top of Serie A.
Asked whether he would want Ronaldinho in his team, Mancini said: “He is a great player and a champion and I think such players are interesting to all clubs.
"He is still relatively young and can still do a lot of good.”
