Tottenham's £16.5 million summer signing, Luka Modric, is reportedly carrying a painful knee injury going into the new season. The news comes from Croatia's assistant coach, Aljosa Asanovic.

"He is excellent, but he has a knee injury that could prevent him playing at the start of the new championship," said the former Derby County midfielder.

"The injury happened during training, but I believe it is painful more than serious."

The Croation midfielder has featured regularly for Spurs during pre-season but these concerns over his fitness have been voiced with the International matches in August and September in mind.

"We must keep an eye on him, we have a friendly match with Slovenia on August 20 and then the qualifying matches against Kazakhstan and England in September," said Asanovic.
