While Arsenal skipper William Gallas has had his critics in the past, striker Emmanuel Adebayor believes the Frenchman stood up to be counted last night.

The Togo hitman was full of praise for the former Chelsea defender as he scrambled home a valuable equaliser two minutes from time to earn the Gunners a 1-1 draw in their opening Champions League Group G fixture at Dynamo Kyiv.

And Adebayor feels the vastly experienced 31-year-old is the right man to lead Arsene Wenger's young Guns.

“At the moment he is playing well and is scoring some goals as well,” Adebayor told the club's offical website.

“It is very good for us. He is one of the oldest players in the side and he brings a lot of experience. We all listen to him and we all do whatever he says. He has won a lot of things in his career and he is sharing this with the young players in the squad.

“Tonight was the type of moment when we needed an experienced player like William Gallas. He has the character and personality. He knows how to handle the big games and got the goal at the end. That was good for the team.”
