Manchester United have become the latest club to reveal their interest in Ajax’s striking sensation Klaas Jan Huntelaar, according to the News of the World.

Huntelaar, 24, is currently one of the hottest transfer targets in Europe, having already scored 30 goals this season and having been the top scorer in the Eredivise last season with a staggering 33 goals in 31 matches.

The paper claims that Huntelaar is planning talks with boss Marco van Basten as he seeks a move away from the Amsterdam club, with the fee thought to be in the region of £18 million.

Real Madrid had been thought to be the favourites to lure him away after coach Bernd Schuster revealed his interest in the Dutchman recently.

However there has been interest in the striker all over the continent with both Chelsea and Milan rumoured to be after the Dutchman, and Manchester United have also reactivated their interest.

Although United haven’t struggled for goals this season they have been a little short of strikers ever since Ruud van Nistelrooy was sold to Real Madrid in 2006.

Whilst Wayne Rooney is an automatic choice up front, his partner often isn’t and United have become heavily reliant on Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals this season.

Louis Saha has been injured far too frequently for manager Sir Alex Ferguson’s liking and whilst Carlos Tevez has proved a shrewd buy he isn’t the goal-getter that van Nistelrooy was, and Ferguson is now hoping Huntelaar will be.
