Manchester United look set to concede defeat in their attempts to sign Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov.

The News of the World claims that the Premier League champions believe Tottenham are going all-out to make it impossible for them to sign the Bulgarian frontman.

The report claims that United have made a £20million bid for the player, but have been staggered to be quoted a ridiculous £38million by the north Londoners.

It appears the public spat between Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and Sir Alex Ferguson over alleged tapping-up of Berbatov, looks set to scupper the deal between the clubs.

Levy, who had reported the Red Devils and Ferguson to the Premier League claiming they had unsettled the player by stating they wanted to sign Berbatov, will go all-out to prevent him from heading to Old Trafford.

And despite the source of Ferguson's alleged quotes being rubbished, Spurs it seems would rather sell Berbatov for a lesser fee to another club.
