Arsene Wenger hasn't cooled his interest in Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso, according to reports, writes Craig Rodhouse.

The Arsenal boss has been tracking the Spaniard throughout the summer and it seems that Wenger still remains as keen as ever to bring the midfielder to the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners boss has seen midfielders Gilberto Silva, Mathieu Flamini and Alexander Hleb leave this summer and despite the signings of Samir Nasri, Aaron Ramsey and Amaury Bischoff, it still seems that Wenger feels he needs one more midfielder and that the 26-year-old would be the perfect addition.

Alonso saw his first team opportunities at Anfield limited last season, mainly due to the form of Javier Mascherano, but it seems that Wenger is prepared to throw the former Real Sociedad man a lifeline - who scored twice for Spain last night in their 3-0 win over Denmark.

Alonso has played 110 times for the Merseysiders, scoring 12 times in a four year spell with the club.
