Manchester United will go back to the drawing board with Wayne Rooney in order to avoid another metatarsal injury.
Rooney will undergo stringent medical tests in a bid to prevent a repeat of the injuries.
The United star is out for the third time in as many years with a broken foot and now the United doctors will scrutinise every aspect of his game to find out if there is a common cause of the problem. They fear Rooney's running style is contributing to the problem and will make the star change it if necessary.
They plan to work hand-in-hand with Nike to develop a boot which will give him maximum protection.
A United source revealed to the News of the World: "It was decided something needed to be done to try to ensure this doesn't happen again. It is too much of a coincidence that he keeps having the same injury."
An FA source said: "There is one theory that Wayne puts too much pressure on parts of his feet. He also tends to pull up sharply after sprinting and that adds extra pressure."
