Kinnear to stay on at Newcastle

Joe Kinnear has signed his first contract since being at St James’ Park, confirming that he will remain the club’s manager until the end of the current season.
Kinnear arrived at Newcastle as interim boss in September and although this was considered a very short term measure, he will now stay on for another six months. During this time, the club’s owner Mike Ashley will continue to try and sell the club.
Speaking about the latest development, Kinnear has said that the players have made him ‘feel at home since day one’ and that he is confident the team can make ‘good progress’ during the rest of the season.
This now means that Kinnear will have free reign to spend money in January trying to improve the current squad. When he arrived at the club, I doubt the football odds expected him to be here come January, so he should relish the prospect of being able to bring in his own players.
In terms of how Kinnear has done since taking over the job, well he has picked up 10 points from 8 Premier League games. It hasn’t been an amazing run of results, but it has been solid enough. Consolidation is the most appropriate word to use I imagine.
Kinnear’s next task is to try and pick up thee points against Middlesbrough tomorrow as his team make the short trip to the Riverside. Not only would victory mark his extended stay at the club, but it would also lift the Magpies out of the relegation zone.
