Portsmouth chief executive, Peter Storrie, admits that he doesn't expect hitman Nwankwo Kanu to sign anything until the start of pre-season training on July 8th.
Storrie said: “As far as I am aware, there are no problems with the contract and Kanu will sign it when he comes back from international duty.
“Considering his international schedule, I would not think it will happen before then. It is up to him.”
Kanu, 31, may be looking for a longer-term deal, but Pompey are hesitant to do so in fear of his age, and record of injury problems.
They also want to finalize the deal before their pre-season tour of Nigeria in July, where Kanu is a national hero.
Pompey plays Manchester United in a friendly at Nigeria’s Abuja National Stadium on July 27th, two weeks before their Community Shield Clash against United at Wembley.
Kanu has also chimed in on the move, he said: "The new offer has been there since January and it is a done deal."
