Hammers Striker Sets Sights On Germany

Craig Bellamy is gunning for Germany after making a successful return in Wales’ 2-0 win over Liechtenstein on Saturday.

The 29-year-old striker returned to captain the national side to a vital, if a little laboured, victory over the Group Four minnows at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium.

The match marked Bellamy’s first competitive appearance since West Ham United’s goalless draw at Portsmouth in October 2007, and the forward admitted to being tired following his nation’s success.

“It was my first game and I think I forgot how big a football pitch is,” he joked after returning from a combination of abdominal, groin and hamstring injuries.

“You can do as much training as you want but games are completely different and I am feeling it a little bit. It is nice to be playing. It could have gone better. As long I didn’t pull up, it has been a big bonus for me.”

Bellamy, who missed a penalty against Liechtenstein, is now odds-on to lead his country into battle against the Germans on Wednesday evening.

And the 52-cap veteran is desperate to start in Moenchengladbach, having missed Wales’ two Euro 2008 qualifiers with the same opposition through injury.

“Germany will be a completely different game, much quicker. It will be a good football pitch (compared to the Millennium Stadium),” he added.

“I don’t seem to be scoring against these teams [Liechtenstein]. My goals have been against the decent sides at international level and there is no more decent team than Germany.”

Wales grabbed a goalless draw in Frankfurt last November and Bellamy believes John Toshack’s side can repeat the trick at the 54,000 Borussia-Park stadium.

“I don’t know why we play better against bigger teams. Maybe the counter attack or maybe the mentality,” he speculated.

“I know it might sound strange but to play against the bigger teams is easier as you know what you are up against, you know you will be up against it, and you know that you need to be on your game otherwise it will be very tough.”
