Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will be placed on red-alert by the news that transfer target Stephane Mbia will be allowed to leave Rennes in the summer.

The Gunners boss according to the player had a last minute bid turned down for the 22-year-old Cameroon international on transfer deadline day last Monday, and Mbai was hopeful that maybe a new deal could be reached in January.

Yesterday hetold Sky Sports: “Listen, I am a Rennes player, the market will open in January and I will concentrate on doing a good job for Rennes [until] then.

“Everyone knows there are clubs that are after me, that is not new. Arsenal made contact in the last hours of the market, but the club did not want to let me go.”

But the French outfit have reached a deal with the player that will see him remain with them until the summer.

“Rennes and Stephane Mbia have reached an agreement which will see them continue their collaboration for the 2008/09 season,” said general manager Pierre Dreossi.

“The player will continue to wear the colours of Rennes for the 2008/09 season and is assured he will be given the chance to be transferred as of next season.”
