Gilberto Explains Why He Left Arsenal

Former Arsenal midfielder Gilberto has explained why he had to leave the Emirates.

The 31-year-old joined Greek giants Panathinaikos last week and admitted that it was the lure of regular first team football that persuaded him to leave Arsenal.

“I don’t know if I’d have had a chance to play this season and then I had this opportunity,” Gilberto told Arsenal TV.

“It’s a great opportunity in terms of playing games and also contractually.

“I’ve got three years there and had just one more year left at Arsenal and I considered all these things.”

Gilberto was a consistent performer for Arsenal, making 170 appearances and scoring 17 goals in a six-year spell with the north Londoners.

However, the Brazillian found his first team chances limited last term, mainly due to the form of Mathieu Flamini, who joined AC Milan earlier in the summer.
