Arsenal Boss Doesn’t Understand Adebayor Hatred

Arsene Wenger admits he he is struggling to comprehend Arsenal fans’ animosity towards striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

The Togolese striker has been jeered by sections of the Gunners crowd after a summer of flirtations with AC Milan and Barcelona, with many believing that last year’s 30-goal hitman was keen to move away.

But Wenger argued that Adebyor’s ‘heart is with the club’ after the 24-year-old put pen to paper on a new £80,000 a week four-year deal with the Gunners.

“I believe it (the booing) was linked with results and goalscoring.

“It was an edgy, nervous game (against West Brom) because when you are one up your fans want to be reassured with another goal.

“He had a few opportunities to score the second goal and didn’t do it. Give him time and watch him score.

“I cannot understand their disappointment with him — his heart is with the club.

“I believe he has been unfairly treated. Why? Because when I met him many times in the summer, he had a lot of interest from many big clubs.

“But he always told me his preference was to stay.

“Maybe there was a misunderstanding at a Press conference in Austria but I know what he told me. He made sacrifices to stay.”
