Premier League results 22nd May 2011- Survival Sunday

Wolverhampton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic escaped the drop in a dramatic round of fixtures on Survival Sunday, while Carling Cup winners Birmingham and Ian Holloway’s Blackpool will join West Ham in the Championship next season.

Wigan beat Stoke 1-0, Wolves lost 3-2 to Blackburn, Birmingham lost 2-1 in stoppage time to Spurs while Blackpool went down 4-2 after leading for six minutes in the second half. Wolves looked destined for the drop when Birmingham were holding Spurs to a 1-1 draw and they themselves were trailing 3-1 to Blackburn, but things changed when they scored to move above Birmingham on goals scored. As it turned out, Birmingham lost, meaning that Wolves’ second goal was not required to save the Black Country club from relegation.

Meanwhile Manchester City beat Bolton 2-0 to confirm third place, while Spurs’ 2-1 win also guaranteed them of a spot in the Europa League at the expense of Liverpool.
